Through rigorous, professional-level productions, students develop creativity, confidence, resilience, and a respect for the theatrical process. Position Details and Terms Employment Term: One full season (encompassing both productions). Review Period: Performance is evaluated at the conclusion of each season to determine rehiring eligibility for the following year. Position Summary The Costume Designer & Wardrobe Lead is responsible for the complete costume design, construction, and management for two annual productions: one play and one musical. This individual collaborates closely with the director and production team from early pre-production planning through strike, ensuring all costumes reflect the artistic vision of each show while meeting the practical needs of student performers. Also, this position is responsible for training the students to complete wardrobe assignments including laundry, mending and construction. Essential Responsibilities Design & Pre-Production : Read and analyze scripts; develop a cohesive costume design concept; create costume plots, character breakdowns, and design renderings; present designs for approval; source, pull, rent, or build costumes within budget; coordinate measurements and initial fittings. Construction & Build Period : Lead weekly crew days; supervise student wardrobe crew; alter and construct garments; maintain an organized and safe costume shop; track inventory and rental agreements. Tech Week & Performances : Organize costume parade; provide wardrobe support during rehearsals and performances; manage quick changes; coordinate with stage management regarding timing cues; ensure proper maintenance and restoration between shows. Strike & Post-Production : Oversee costume strike; clean, catalog, and store costume pieces; return borrowed or rented items; provide a final costume budget report. Qualifications Background in fashion design, theater arts, or related field. Demonstrated experience in costume design, construction, or theatrical wardrobe. Experience in a high school, community, or educational theater setting (preferred). Experience supervising or mentoring student volunteers or crew members (preferred). Ability to collaborate effectively with directors and student performers. Familiarity with musical theater costuming and period/character design. Proficiency in sewing, garment alteration, and basic costume construction techniques. Working knowledge of theatrical safety procedures and backstage operations. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage production schedules. Knowledge of costume budgeting, sourcing, and inventory management. Commitment to maintain a safe and professional work environment. Reliable availability for meetings, crew days, rehearsals, and tech week commitments. Physical Requirements and Work Conditions Lifting and Carrying: Manage and transport costume inventories and equipment. Mobility and Posture: Stand, stoop, kneel, and bend for extended periods; navigate backstage and storage areas. Manual Dexterity: Skilled in hand and machine sewing, garment alteration, and use of costume shop tools. Vision and Hearing: Close vision, color perception, depth perception, and normal auditory ability required. Physical Stamina & Mobility: Attend intensive production periods, tech week rehearsals, and weekly crew days for 6–8 weeks. Active On-Stage/Backstage Labor: Perform fittings, assist performers, execute quick changes, and handle emergency repairs. Production Commitments Pre-Production Meeting – initial design presentation and character breakdown review. Regular Production Meetings (4) – progress updates and design adjustments. Final Pre-Tech Meeting – costume readiness review and tech week schedule confirmation. Rehearsals – attend Designer Run and Costume Parade. Weekly Crew Days – one per week for 6–8 consecutive weeks. Tech Week – full attendance for all tech rehearsals and performances. Compensation and Benefits This position offers a stipend ranging from $4,500 to $6,300 per show. The exact amount is determined by the specific production season and will be detailed in the formal offer letter. Specifics regarding payment schedule will be discussed during the hiring process.
