Job Description

At Trans Empowerment Project, design isn't decoration.

The visuals we create help people find resources, teach potential allies something they didn't know, bring fundraising campaigns to life, turn complicated information into something people can actually understand, and challenge the tired narratives we're constantly handed about who trans people are.

We're looking for volunteer Graphic Designers who can help us make that work look as powerful as it deserves to.

This is a hands-on creative role for someone who already has graphic design skills and wants to put them to work for trans communities.

What You'll Create

There's rarely a shortage of things that need to look good around here.

Depending on your interests, skills, and current TEP projects, you might design:

  • Social media graphics and campaigns
  • Instagram carousels and educational content
  • Fundraising and peer-to-peer campaign assets
  • Event graphics and promotional materials
  • Flyers, postcards, signage, and other print materials
  • Infographics and data visualizations
  • Website graphics
  • Email and newsletter graphics
  • Program materials and resources
  • Branded templates that help our team create consistent content
  • The occasional weird, delightful thing we haven't thought of yet

You'll work within TEP's existing visual identity while also helping us explore creative ways to make individual campaigns, programs, and events feel distinctive.

What You'll Do

  • Collaborate with TEP's communications team to turn ideas, information, and campaign concepts into strong visual content.
  • Create polished, on-brand designs for digital and print use.
  • Translate sometimes-complicated information into graphics that are clear, engaging, and accessible.
  • Follow established brand guidelines while bringing your own creativity and design perspective to the work.
  • Incorporate feedback and revisions into final designs.
  • Help maintain visual consistency across TEP's communications.
  • Think intentionally about accessibility, representation, and whose experiences our visuals center.
  • Communicate proactively about project timelines, questions, and capacity.
  • Deliver finished work by agreed-upon deadlines.

The Important Part: You Need to Know How to Design

We want to be very clear about this because we respect both your time and ours:

This is a volunteer opportunity for people who already have demonstrated graphic design skills. It is not a graphic design training program.

You absolutely do not need a graphic design degree , formal agency experience, or a fancy professional title. Self-taught designers are welcome. Students with strong design skills are welcome. People who've been making incredible graphics for community organizations, Twitch channels, fandoms, student groups, or their own projects are welcome.

But you do need to show us that you can design.

Applicants should be prepared to share a portfolio or several examples of previous work demonstrating a solid understanding of layout, typography, visual hierarchy, color, and composition.

You Might Be a Great Fit If You...

  • Already have solid graphic design skills and can demonstrate them through previous work.
  • Understand fundamentals like typography, hierarchy, composition, branding, and designing for different formats.
  • Are comfortable using Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Affinity, Figma, or another professional design workflow .
  • Can take a creative brief or rough concept and turn it into a finished visual.
  • Can receive feedback and make revisions. (Creative collaboration requires both!)
  • Can work independently while communicating well with a remote team.
  • Pay attention to details and follow through on agreed-upon deadlines.
  • Think about accessibility as part of good design, not an afterthought.
  • Care deeply about trans communities and share TEP's commitment to racial, disability, economic, and gender justice.

Experience designing for nonprofits, advocacy organizations, social media campaigns, fundraising, or community organizations is helpful but not required .

What You'll Get From Us

We don't expect volunteers to somehow read our minds.

We'll provide project context, messaging, brand guidance, dimensions and deliverable requirements, deadlines, and feedback. You'll have access to existing TEP assets and templates and work directly with the people responsible for the campaigns and programs you're supporting.

In return, you'll have opportunities to:

  • Create real-world work used by a national nonprofit organization.
  • Expand your portfolio across digital, social, fundraising, event, and print design.
  • Experiment with different kinds of mission-driven creative work.
  • Collaborate with a team that genuinely values good design.
  • See your creative work directly support programs, campaigns, and resources serving 2TIGE communities.
  • Most importantly, you'll help us create communications that don't just talk about trans people — they reflect the joy, complexity, power, diversity, and humanity of our communities.
